Illegibility (1995) is study on typography dealing with a well-known problem in today’s typography such as the relationship between verbal and visual communication. The world we live in has at least three dimensions; it is abstract, ambiguous, dynamic and very expressive, while the media we use are flat, plain, emotionless, and neutral. The written word especially seems to be inadequately expressed because it is so still. How can we transmit complex ideas on a sheet of paper? How can we compress it in two dimensions and loose the least from the message? The books discusses some of these questions.
