Craft, my first published typeface, was the last typeface that I had entirely hand-drawn, or in fact hand-cut. More than 300 characters were cut into linoleum. I was not looking for individual shapes of letters, rather I’d focus on the overall image of the text, creating a particular texture of design. I would cut 10 different letter-spaces to get the right natural organic feeling in a block of text. It was a bit ironic, I was imitating old woodcuts on the computer, on this new medium with new possibilities. Since then, I’ve been creating typefaces partly or wholly on the computer.
