Shigatse is the second largest city of tibet, and the traditional seat of panchen Lama, the second highest ranked lama of tibetan Buddhism. the Chinese government asserts that his today’s reincarnation is Gyaincain Norbu, son of members of Communist party. the 11th panchen Lama chosen by the tibetans has been kidnapped and kept in house arrest. panchen Lama is a key figure in selecting the future Dalai Lama, which explains the interest of Beijing. On the left of the photograph is a 30 million yuan reconstruction of the Sangzhuzi Monastery, funded by the Chinese government. they call it ‘Sangzhuzi Castle’, a on-site museum and a multifunction sightseeing complex. the original Sangzhuzi Monastery from 1363 was destroyed by the Chinese during the ‘cultural revolution’.
