On 19 November 2004, large parts of the forests in the southern part of the High Tatras were damaged by a 5 hour long wind storm reaching speed of 200 km per hour. Over 3 million cubic metre of trees were uprooted, two people died, electricity supply was interrupted, and several villages were totally cut off for few days. An area of about 10.000 km2 forest was destroyed, leaving behind flat land with fallen trees. Further damage was done by a subsequent forest fire.
